Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

The primary goal of education is the development of individuals who possess the knowledge,
skills and human characteristics necessary to enable them to live meaningful lives and to
make positive contributions to society (see 53-14-10UCA1953).  Lehi High School accepts a
joint responsibility with parents to give special emphasis to habits and qualities of character
which promote an upright and desirable citizenry.

Regular attendance affects student success.  Students may occasionally need to be absent for
illness, emergencies, etc.  In such cases they must make up all work missed.  Students have
the responsibility to arrange make-up work with their teachers.

Lehi High School provides immediate computerized attendance information.  Parents or
students may check attendance at any time via Skyward.

Excusing Absences:
Students who miss class must have a parent/guardian call the school.  A truancy is when a
student is deliberately absent from school and/or class without the knowledge or consent of
their parents or the school.  An automated attendance caller will call home each
afternoon/evening to report unexcused absences.

Ten Day Rule:
By law, any student who does not attend school for ten consecutive days without a legitimate
excuse will be dropped from school rolls.

Tardiness:
A student is considered tardy if he/she is not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings.

Loss of Credit Procedure:
Each term, upon the fifth excused absence, students will receive an “NC” (No Credit) in the
class or classes in which those absences have accumulated.  A parental note does not excuse
a tardy.  Approved Extracurricular absences are school excused and do not count as one of
the four allowable absences.

An “NC” differs from an “F” in that an “NC” does not figure into the student’s overall GPA.
However, both “NC” and “F” result in a loss of credit.  For student activity/athletic eligibility
purposes, an “NC” is counted as an “F”.

Making Up “No Credit”
Attendance School
A student may attend Attendance School to make up absences and tardies.  Students should
come prepared with homework or reading materials.  Students not on task (i.e. talking,
sleeping, etc.) will be asked to leave and will not receive credit.

After-school Math and English labs are an additional way of making up absences.

Work with Individual Teachers:
Individual teachers may allow students to make up absences from their class only.  Teachers
are not obligated to provide make-up hours.

Appeals:
It is generally expected that students who exceed five absences will attend Attendance
School or lose credit.  Exemptions from the Attendance Policy will be considered and ruled
upon by the LHS administration.

Attendance Standards:
1 Truancy/Unexcused Absence In A Class = NC
5 Excused Absences In A Class = NC
5 Tardies In A Class = NC
*  School excused absences do not count against you
**A student who has earned an “F” in any class and is also
eligible for an “NC” will receive an “F” grade instead of an
    “NC”.  Earned “F’s” supersede “NC’s”.

Attendance School:
1 hour per tardy over four
1 hour per excused absence over four
1 hour per truancy/unexcused absence
